The condition of the ancient mining evidence inside Mammoth Cave is comparable to the condition of materials found in the driest Egyptian tombs — preservation so complete that organic materials survive in near-original condition, that spatial relationships are maintained, that individual episodes of behavior can be reconstructed from physical evidence.

But even the best archive has limits.
