The Ancient Native City Hidden Beneath America – And Why Scientists Think It Was Once One Of The Largest Settlements North Of Mexico
As the excavation expanded and more post holes were identified, the picture became clearer.
There had been not just one circle of posts but several, placed in overlapping or successive patterns in the same area of the site.
The circles were large — some had diameters of 100 meters or more.
And when the positions of the posts were plotted against a map of the landscape and compared with the directions of sunrise and sunset at significant dates in the astronomical calendar, a striking pattern emerged: posts in the circles were positioned so that an observer at a specific central location would see the sunrise over specific posts on the spring and fall equinoxes, the summer solstice, and possibly the winter solstice.
This was not coincidence.
