The recovery of Lozen’s story is part of the project of telling that more complete history.

It is not a correction of the military history that already exists; it is an addition to it, a perspective that complements and complicates the account that the written record alone provides.

The Last Apache

The final Apache holdouts — the people who maintained resistance after Geronimo’s surrender — were a handful of fighters known as the Broncos, who continued to operate in the mountains of Mexico for years after 1886.

The last of these were killed or captured in the 1930s, more than four decades after the main resistance ended.
