The correction of this invisibility — the work of historians, of Apache community members who preserved the oral tradition, of readers and writers who have brought her story to a broader audience — is not complete.

It is ongoing.

There are other stories still to be recovered, other individuals still to be found in the fragments of the oral tradition and the footnotes of the military record.

But Lozen’s story is being told.

The Apache woman who fought beside Geronimo, who was Victorio’s shield, who crossed the Rio Grande alone and came back to the resistance — her name is being spoken.

Her capabilities are being recognized.
