The experience of Apache women during the prisoner years — at Fort Marion, at Mount Vernon Barracks in Alabama, and eventually at Fort Sill in Oklahoma — deserves specific attention, because it was the context in which Lozen spent her final years.

The women who had been part of the resistance arrived in Florida as the wives, sisters, mothers, and daughters of the fighters who had surrendered.

They had survived years of running and fighting and enduring, and they faced a new set of challenges in the conditions of captivity.
