The Surrender of 1886

The end of the Apache resistance came in stages.

Geronimo surrendered to General Crook in March 1886, at Canyon de los Embudos in Mexico, but then withdrew before the surrender could be completed when he heard rumors about what was planned for the Apache prisoners.

He and a small band continued the resistance for several more months.

The final surrender occurred in September 1886, at Skeleton Canyon in Arizona, when Geronimo and the remaining fighters — by this point a small band exhausted by years of pursuit — agreed to terms with General Nelson Miles.

The agreement included a promise that the Apache would be sent to Florida for a period before being allowed to return to the Southwest.
