The Oral Tradition and Its Preservation

The documentation of Lozen’s life depends primarily on the oral tradition preserved by the Apache people, and particularly on the accounts collected by historians and anthropologists who recognized the importance of recording what the written record had not.

The most significant work of collection was done by Eve Ball, a New Mexico writer and historian who spent decades interviewing Apache people who had survived the wars and the prisoner years, or who were the children and grandchildren of those survivors.
