The academic recovery of Lozen’s history began in earnest with Eve Ball’s publications in the 1970s and 1980s, which brought the oral accounts to the attention of a broader scholarly and public audience.

Ball’s work was not uncritical — she was aware of the limitations of the accounts she was working with and acknowledged them — but it was committed to the fundamental proposition that the Apache perspective on the Apache Wars was worth preserving and publishing.

Ball’s work was followed by a growing body of scholarly attention to Apache history, and particularly to the history of Apache women in the resistance period.
