Michael stared at the paperwork, cornered and humiliated in front of his new woman. Khloe tugged his sleeve, her eyes calculating. “Just sign it, Michael,” she said, loud enough for the room.

“We don’t need her money. We just need each other. We’ll build our own beautiful life.”

It stroked his bruised ego exactly right. With a sneer at me, he uncapped the heavy gold pen and scrawled his signature across the line.

“Don’t come crying to me when you die alone,” he spat, and tossed the pen down.

I gathered the signed documents, relief flooding my lungs. The noose was gone.

“Don’t worry, Michael,” I smiled. “I’ll be watching your new life very closely.”
