And then the last nail. Robert, hearing the violence, rushed out of his apartment. Seeing Michael advancing on Khloe, the old man threw himself between them, shielding the mother and child.
In front of a dozen wide-eyed neighbors, he confessed. Weeping, he admitted to a grief-fueled affair with his dead son’s wife.
Michael didn’t hit him. He didn’t scream anymore. Pam said he just dropped to his knees on the carpet, clutching his hair, and let out a sound so hollow it made the onlookers sick.
The next day my phone rang.
I was in my office looking at the blueprints for the new resort. Michael’s name on the screen. I let it ring to the last second before answering.
“Sarah.” His voice was a devastated croak.
