Richard’s face went red. “You think a thief gets to negotiate?”

“You’re welcome to dial 911,” Mr. Harrison said, and the temperature in the room dropped ten degrees. “But you can’t charge her with theft. Margaret’s accounts are legally frozen, and Elena is the sole beneficiary.”

“Beneficiary?” Marcus was on his feet. “I’m the eldest son! That money is mine!”

Mr. Harrison took the notarized will out of his briefcase. “Margaret disinherited you, Marcus. You have no legal claim to a penny of her estate.”

“It’s a forgery!” His voice cracked. “She faked it! The lawyer’s in on it!”

I put my hands flat on the table. “Marcus. I have recordings of you at the Grand Wailea in Maui with Chloe while your mother was dying. Would you like me to play them for the room?”
