Daniel Carter. Emily’s younger brother. He had driven nearly three hours after receiving repeated calls from the hospital.

He stopped the instant he reached the doorway. Inside, he saw his sister awake.

He saw Ethan smiling through tears. He saw the old silver music box resting quietly on the blanket.

Daniel couldn’t speak. Emily looked toward him and smiled weakly.
