The Bread Under His Pillow
For my whole life, that trembling voice had worked on me — one word about being her son and I’d clear her debts, settle her disputes, look past her cruelty.
But all I could see now was my son eating stale bread on the floor and my pregnant wife begging me not to be angry.
“The humiliation started the moment you locked a pregnant woman in a damp room and refused to feed her,” I said.
Samantha opened her folder and read the charges. “Grand fraud, document forgery, extortion, domestic abuse, unlawful confinement, and fabricating evidence.”
My father slammed the table. “That house was paid for with my money!”
“You never contributed a cent to it.”
