Eli touched his glass to hers. “And stubborn children.”
Her phone began vibrating inside her satin purse. Once. Twice. Then again. Maddie pulled it out. Seven messages waited beneath one name. Tyler. The champagne turned sour in her mouth.
Eli started to rise. “I can give you some privacy.”
“No.” Maddie placed the phone between them. “Stay.”
The screen lit again. Tyler Vaughn Calling. Maddie stared at the photograph attached to his name — the two of them smiling on a beach in Florida, sunburned and certain they had a future.
“Are you going to answer?” Eli asked.
