“We are no longer an us.”

The words entered the room and settled there. For the first time all evening, Maddie felt the truth of them. There would be no apartment in Lexington.

No joint checking account. No Christmas at Tyler’s parents’ lake house. No children with his gray eyes. No lazy Sunday mornings with his coffee mug beside hers.

The future she had rehearsed vanished. But the room remained. The table remained. Her father remained. She remained.

Tyler lowered his voice. “Are you still at the venue?”

“Yes.”
