Eli created procedures for storage and transport. Maddie coordinated with shelters and community kitchens. They called it the Empty Chair Project. Within a year, six venues had joined.

The photograph of the abandoned bride eventually disappeared beneath newer scandals and fresher gossip, but the project remained — wedding dinners, corporate lunches, and graduation banquets began feeding people who had never seen the ballrooms where the meals were prepared.

Eli returned to community college. Martin promoted him to assistant events manager. Maddie finished nursing school and took a position in the emergency department at a Lexington hospital.

Their relationship grew in ordinary moments. Eli brought coffee during her overnight study sessions. Maddie sat with Diane during physical therapy after a second hip surgery.

Frank taught Eli to diagnose a failing compressor by sound. Eli taught Frank to send a text without signing his name at the bottom.
