Eleven days later, in a lawyer’s office, Mitchell told me that he had been “in shock” and had “not processed it properly.” I believe that is what he believes.
What I think actually happened in those thirteen minutes is that a man read a message and immediately calculated what would happen if any of it became official, and that the calculation had a number in it, and that the number was one he did not want anybody to look at.
I did not reply.
I blocked the number, which I now know was a mistake and which my lawyer made me undo four days later — you do not block the other parent in a custody matter, ever, no matter what he has done — but on that night in that parking lot it was the only thing my hands would do.

I booked a hotel from the clinic waiting room, as instructed, and we were checked in by ten.
