Then I did the only thing I could think of that was useful, which was that I opened my laptop, and I downloaded every relevant file, and I made three copies — one in cloud storage, one on an external drive I had in my bag for work, and one that I emailed to myself at an address the family did not know existed.
I did that before I called anybody.
