The Candle Labeled “To Brandon’s Girl”
Understand what it cost her.
This was a child who had been taught, carefully, over three years, that this room was dangerous to her — that in this house she was a guest, a visitor, Brandon’s girl, that her belonging was conditional and could be revoked, that the adults here would not protect her and might, at any moment, produce a new small humiliation with her name almost on it.
Every instinct three years of that builds into a child says: stay small, stay quiet, don’t draw the eye, don’t give them a reason.
And she overrode every one of those instincts and stood up and walked, alone, the length of the room, straight toward the source of all of it.
