Part One

They called it a tragic accident. My husband and our nine-year-old twin sons vanished during a fishing trip at the lake, and for seven years the water kept its secret.

Then my daughter handed me a forgotten phone — and a video that revealed the truth.

Chapter 1 — The Video

Daniel’s face appeared on the tiny cracked screen, but it wasn’t the face I remembered from that last morning.

Not the laughing husband who promised to be home for dinner. Not the father who’d packed fishing rods, peanut butter sandwiches, and sunscreen at dawn.

This Daniel looked pale, exhausted, terrified. He sat in our garage, the old workbench behind him, one hand pressed to his mouth as if he were trying not to fall apart.

Then he looked directly into the camera. “Sophie,” he whispered, “if you’re watching this, it means I kept you safe.”

My daughter sobbed beside me. I couldn’t move.

Daniel’s eyes filled. “You’re too little to understand right now. That’s why I need you to hide this. Don’t show Mom until ten years have passed — unless someone comes back first.”

Someone comes back. The words went through me like ice.

He swallowed hard. “Tomorrow morning I’m taking Ethan and Noah to Lake Cumberland. But we are not going fishing.”

The room spun. My hand tightened on the phone until Sophie whispered, “Mom, breathe.”

On the screen, Daniel glanced over his shoulder, then went on. “I found out what Michael did.”
