The Ceramic Lighthouse
“I was the leverage, Mom. He said it. Not the police, not Michael, not a lawyer — *him.* On a video, to me, in his own voice.”
I said all the true things. That he had hours, not weeks. That he was thirty-eight and terrified and had no one to ask. That the twins were the ones Michael had photographed.
That he believed he was coming back. That he kept my picture in his boot for three years and taught two boys never to say the name of that lake.
Sophie listened to every word of it without interrupting.
Then she said: “I know all of that. I believe all of it. It’s still true that he chose.”
And I heard my own son at a graveside five years earlier — *Dad saved us and broke us* — and I heard myself say *yes*, and I understood that I had been able to say yes about the boys and had not once managed it about my daughter.
