As I walked toward Nathan, I didn’t feel like I’d been rescued by a powerful man. That would have been a beautiful lie. But a lie all the same.

The truth was different. I began saving myself the night I took off the apron. Nathan simply opened the door.

During the reception, he took my hand and kissed my knuckles again, just as he had that night in my parents’ kitchen. “I’m sorry, my love,” he whispered.

“I was late.”
