There is no clean way to trace the downstream effects of her educational advocacy — to count the engineers and mathematicians who exist because she talked to a high school audience in 1978, or because a scholarship she funded made the difference between dropping out and graduating.

That is not unusual.

The downstream effects of educational advocacy are almost never cleanly traceable.

The teacher who changes a student’s trajectory usually does not know about it, because the student does not always know to go back and say so, and because the chain from a single conversation to a specific career outcome is long and mediated by many other factors.
