It is also, to the extent that it goes beyond what the available record supports, inaccurate.
The obligation to accuracy about a historical figure’s achievements is, in some ways, more demanding when the figure is someone who has been underrecognized than when the figure is someone whose recognition is secure.
The temptation to overstate is understandable — she deserves recognition, and the classified gaps feel like injustice, and filling them with what seems plausible is emotionally satisfying.
