The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, which opened on the National Mall in Washington in 2004, included Mary Ross in its inaugural celebration — she attended in Cherokee regalia, at the age of ninety-six, and was photographed in a way that became one of the defining images of her public recognition.
That photograph — an elderly Cherokee woman in traditional dress, at the opening of a museum built in the center of the American capital to honor Native American cultures and histories — is worth sitting with for a moment.
She was born two years after the Wright brothers flew at Kitty Hawk.
