I met her once, in a corridor outside a courtroom in Hartford, which is a thing nobody plans.

We were both waiting.

There was nowhere else to be.

And after about four minutes she said, without turning her head: “I’m not going to apologize to you, because I think it would be for me.”

And I said, “All right.”

And she said: “I didn’t know about the money.

I knew about you.”

Which is, I have decided, the only honest thing anybody in that building said to me that week, and I did not forgive her for it and I have never stopped respecting it.
