The Closing Statement
I have never once made that difficult and I never will.
She comes on the second Sunday of the month and she brings something she has baked and she and I are extremely careful with each other in a way that I do not expect to stop being.
The one thing either of us has ever said about it was in a kitchen in the autumn, when she was putting a tin into a bag to go home, and she said, without turning round:
“I signed a paper in 2011 because my son asked me to and I didn’t read it.”
