And I remember being briefly irritated, because it seemed to me an obvious question with an obvious answer that he already knew, and I was tired, and I said:

“To give Julian the money to start the company.”

There was a silence in that room of a quality I had never experienced before and have experienced twice since.

I said it again.

He stood up.
