“I can, and I will call security if the child indicates she feels intimidated by your presence,” Bridget replied calmly.

Bonnie tried to step in with her usual rehearsed indignation. “This is a gross abuse of power. My daughter has rights!”

Bridget looked at her with a calm, unimpressed expression. “And Gracie has rights as well,” she said, effectively silencing them both.

Carolina tried to argue, but two uniformed security guards appeared in the doorway. They didn’t touch her; their mere presence made the point. Carolina turned and left with her mother—but just before she disappeared into the hall, she cast one last, icy glare at Gracie that made the girl flinch.

Sawyer sat down quickly beside his daughter. “She’s gone now, honey. I’m right here with you,” he murmured, stroking her hair.

It took Gracie several long minutes to steady her breathing. Bridget didn’t pressure her. She offered her water and reminded her that she was safe, and that no one could ever punish her for being honest.
