The Crate in the Parking Lot
Date.
Time.
Who it was.
What it was about.
One line each.
I started it eight weeks after she left, and the reason I started it was that Alvin Prager had not yet told me anything, and somebody at my work had said something about documentation, and I had a notion — vague, half-formed, entirely wrong — that if she ever came back and claimed she had tried, I would be able to prove she had not.
It ran to four notebooks and about nineteen thousand lines and it stopped in 2019 when the landline went.
