She called that afternoon and I answered it and we spoke for perhaps ninety seconds and she asked to meet and I said no.

And she called again on the Friday and I said all right.

Neither of them is in the notebook.

I did not forget.

I want to be accurate about that, because forgetting would be forgivable.

I stood in a hallway in Stockton on a Thursday afternoon in October 2013 with a spiral notebook in my hand and a pen, and I made a decision, and the decision took about four seconds and I have never once been able to pretend it was anything else.
