I am doing it anyway, and I am putting the fact that I know it in the same paragraph, which is the most honest I have managed to be about anything in fifteen years.

Part Fifteen: Eleven-Forty at Night

I drove from the restaurant to the motel where four of them were staying and I sat in the lot for eleven minutes and then I texted Odile: are you up. im in the parking lot. i need to tell you something and it cant wait till after.

She came down in a hoodie and sweatpants and got in the passenger seat and said, “Dad, it’s twenty to midnight.”

And I said, “In October 2013 your mother came back and asked to see you and I told her no.”
