The Crate in the Parking Lot
He told me why in a parking lot at ten at night in June: a gift box has a lift-off lid, and a full-width hinge is so the thing stays open.
She built a box that could not be shut.
And then she stood up in front of a hundred and fifty-one people with a microphone and did not open it, and corrected a sentence about herself instead, and sat down.
That is my oldest daughter.
That is what she did in front of everybody.
Nobody gasped.
Nobody filmed it.
It did not go anywhere.
It was the bravest thing I have ever seen a person do and about forty people in that room understood it, and one of them was a woman of forty-four in a navy dress in the back left corner who had asked to be seated where nobody had to look at her.
