The Crate in the Parking Lot
Bin five was receipts.
Grocery receipts.
Odile had a box of them from 2011 to 2014 that had been in my hall closet in a Nike box and that I had also forgotten about.
And bin six was a single sheet of paper in a frame.
It was a spreadsheet.
My daughter had run the California guideline calculation for six children, year by year, using Maren Ostlund’s actual income from 2010 to 2025, which she had obtained — and I asked her how and she would not tell me and I have a bad feeling about the answer — and she had compounded it at the statutory ten percent.
The figure at the bottom was four hundred and twelve thousand dollars.
