I brought no cameras and I told no one.
I tied on an apron and I served hot meals to a long line of cold and tired people, and when a woman in a torn coat held out her tray, I felt the old disgust rise in me on reflex — and then I remembered whose daughter I was, and I looked at her, really looked, and I asked if she’d like extra stew, and I gave her a double portion, and I smiled at her like the human being she was.
