There is enormous pressure, in families like the one I married into, to keep the surface smooth, to not make a scene, to handle things quietly and internally so that the family’s image survives intact.
That pressure is presented as loyalty, as maturity, as knowing how to keep the peace.
But it is really just a demand that the vulnerable absorb harm silently so that the powerful can keep their reputations, and I have no use for it anymore.
