I went very still.
“Grandpa didn’t what, sweetheart?” “Grandpa didn’t believe me,” Lucas whispered.
I made myself keep my voice level, made myself keep stroking his hair, though everything in me had gone cold and sharp.
“What did your grandfather do, Lucas?” My son closed his eyes, and fresh tears slipped from beneath his lashes.
“He screamed at me,” he said.
“He called me a thief.
