Chapter 11 — It Stopped Being a Family Matter
I rose to my feet, slowly, and I stepped so that I was standing directly between Arthur Vance and my son’s bed, and I looked at him.
“Explain to me,” I said, and I kept my voice very low and very even, because I have learned that the lowest voice in a room is often the one people cannot ignore, “why my son was found nearly unconscious on the side of a highway, in a freezing storm, more than a mile from your house.” Arthur squared his shoulders, gathering the tattered remains of his composure around himself.
