The Door I Opened Wide
But the instant Arthur’s own comfort was threatened, the instant there were police and charges and consequences, suddenly we were family, suddenly the bond was sacred, suddenly I was obligated to close ranks and make it all disappear.

Family is not a shield you get to pick up only when you are the one in danger.
It is an obligation that runs in every direction, all the time, and a man who will not extend its protection to a freezing child on his own doorstep has forfeited any right to claim its protection for himself.
I was not going to launder Arthur’s cruelty through the word family.
