The Dress He Bought Three Days Early
That worried Margaret more than crying would have.
She had asked eleven very specific questions on Sunday — where is Mom’s body right now, does it hurt, will she be cold, who is going to take me to swimming — and had accepted every answer, and then had mostly stopped talking.
On Tuesday morning Margaret dressed her in a navy dress with a cardigan because she did not own anything black and Margaret was not going to buy a seven-year-old a black dress.
They drove down the 15 with the radio off.
Somewhere around Friars Road, Sophie said, from the back seat:
“Grandma. Mom’s here.”
