The Dress He Bought Three Days Early

He had been at home in Santee with a coffee and the paper, and he had gone out the door in what he was wearing and had called the watch commander from the car, and he told Margaret afterward that he had spent the entire eighteen-minute drive preparing what he was going to say to her when he got there and found nothing.
He came up the aisle of that chapel in a golf shirt with a badge on his belt, and Margaret stepped back from the casket, and he looked for about four seconds.

Nobody leaves.”
He got on the phone to the medical examiner’s office himself.
