The Empty Bed
You get told. By four hundred and eleven people. Before you’re twelve.
I kept it for three years.
I want to explain that, because my mother asked me why about eleven times and I could not do it in the moment.
At twelve I didn’t tell her because she’d cried in front of me for about a week after Max came home, and I had a strong and completely stupid conviction that she was fragile and that I was the one who had to be careful.
At thirteen I didn’t tell her because it had been a year, and a year makes it a secret instead of a piece of news.
At fourteen I didn’t tell her because I’d started to be angry, and I did not want to be angry at her, because she is the person who drove fifteen minutes across town and got my dog out of a kennel and sat on the concrete floor and cried into her fur.
