The Empty Bed
I have thought a great deal about what I would say if she does offer it, and I have decided that the answer is probably nothing at all, because I said everything I had to say on the subject at six o’clock in the morning four years ago to nine hundred people, and it went round the town in a day, and I have never once had to sit with the fact that I said it first.
That post is still up. Four hundred and eleven comments. I read it again in the autumn for the first time since I wrote it and I got about halfway.
It’s a good piece of writing. That is the strangest thing about it. It is well constructed and it is furious and it is nearly all true.
And there is a girl in it who is eleven years old and does not speak, and who cannot correct one word.
She’s fifteen now. She’s upstairs with a laptop and a dog on the wrong bed, writing the other one.
End of Part Two.
