“We’re already leaving,” Colin said. “Nora — call the police.”
Arthur laughed. “The police? For a dog? It was on my property!”
“Max is a registered service animal worth more than fifteen thousand dollars,” I said, “and in this state, harming or unlawfully disposing of one is a felony.”
His face went from smug to furious as it landed.
“Give me that phone.” He lunged, his hand going for my wrist — and Colin stepped in front of me, caught him by the arm, and walked him back a step, hard.
“Don’t touch her,” Colin said, low and shaking. “Sit down and stay down until the officers get here.”
