I had crossed that line years before and not noticed, because the crossing was gradual, and because every individual payment still felt like generosity even as the whole pattern had become exploitation.

What the empty plate did was show me the line, all at once, in the starkest possible terms.

Generous people do not hand the person funding their feast an empty plate.

That is not a thing that happens inside genuine gratitude; it is a thing that happens only inside entitlement so total that the source of the generosity has ceased, in the recipient’s mind, to be a person at all.

And so canceling those payments was not the abandonment of my generosity.
