The Empty Plate
There is no way to tell yourself that the woman who ordered a feast and then handed you, specifically, an empty plate, in front of everyone, was merely stressed, or caught in the middle, or joking.
The empty plate stripped away every comfortable interpretation and left only the naked truth underneath, the truth I had been paying, for four years, not to see: that these people did not consider me one of them, had never considered me one of them, and valued me exactly as much as my last payment and not one cent more.
Sometimes it takes a cruelty that cannot be excused to free a person who has become expert at excusing cruelty.
The empty plate was that cruelty.
