The Empty Will
But it took me a long time.
For weeks after I understood what had really been happening, I could not forgive myself for how completely I had misread my own son’s voice in that hallway.
I had heard a boy offering to help his mother and my heart had simply glowed.
But that, I have come to believe, is not a failing to be ashamed of so much as the natural cost of having raised children you trusted.
You cannot spend a lifetime teaching a boy to be kind and helpful and then berate yourself for believing, when you hear him being kind and helpful, that kindness is exactly what it is.
