The Empty Will
For one horrible moment my mind raced through every awful thing a husband might hide across a lifetime — debts, a secret kept for decades, some ruin he had carried alone while sitting across from me at the breakfast table every morning.
My hands shook so badly I had to press the page flat against my knee to read the next lines.
“All my life with you, I kept one thing hidden, and I did it to keep you safe.
Hear me clearly, Frances: I did not leave you penniless.
I left you everything we built together.
Every brick of it.
But you must not trust my sister Shirley — not for one moment, not under any circumstances — and you must read every word of this letter to the very end before you do anything at all.”
I sat very still in that leather chair, in the quiet office, and I felt the ground of the last two weeks shift completely beneath me.
