The Empty Will
The first document was an irrevocable living trust.
It had been created and legally recorded years earlier — long before Lawrence ever fell ill — and it quietly transferred our entire estate, the house on Elm Street and every bank account and all the rest of it, into a private trust that named me, and me alone, as both sole trustee and sole beneficiary upon my husband’s death.
Everything we had built in sixty-nine years was already mine, had been mine for years, held safe inside a structure that no will and no court challenge could touch.
The will that had left me nothing was exactly what Lawrence had called it: an empty box.
