Lucas had fished that particular lake for more than three years, and he knew it the way some men know a scripture.

He knew every launch point and every shallow stretch, every cove where the water went still and every channel where the current turned unpredictable after a hard rain.

He knew Lake Oconee better than most people know the streets of their own neighborhood, and that knowledge was not casual to him.

It was a responsibility he took as seriously as he took everything that involved his boys and the water.
